Freeing up disk space can remedy a long list of computer problems. From crashing and sluggish performance in some computers to error messages and warnings in others.

This guide is a compilation of the most common ways to free up disk space on your computer.

Step 1 - Run the Disk Cleanup Tool

From Windows 98 to Windows XP the disk cleanup tool is a prepackaged tool that is frequently ignored and forgotten by computer users.

The Disk Cleanup Wizard is located at:

Windows 98: Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk Cleanup

Windows XP: Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk Cleanup

The disk cleanup wizard does crash from time to time, usually caused by Spyware. If this happens to you, use the recommended tools box (left) to clean your computer of Spyware and Adware.

Step 2 - Remove Unneeded Applications

Go to "Add and Remove Programs" (Listed in the Control Panel) and remove applications that you never use, are old or outdated, or don't work anymore.

Step 3 - Backup Old Files and Large Documents to CD

If you have a lot of unused files or folders laying around your computer you may want to back them up to CD and then delete them off of your computer. This not only frees up disk space but also gives you peace of mind that if something catastrophic happened to your computer your old documents would be safe.

What software to use to backup the files?

FixTool recommends Nero.

...But the software that came with your computer will probably work just as well.

If the documents you are backing up to your computer are important it is wise to make two CD's and test each CD before starting to remove the files off of your computer. Store the CDs in a safe place inside a protective cover.
