Freeing up disk space can remedy a raft of computer problems — from crashing and sluggish performance for some, to error messages and warnings for others.
Here’s a list of ways to free up disk space on your computer.
Step 1 - Run the Disk Cleanup Tool
Present in Windows from 98 to Vista, Disk Cleanup is a prepackaged tool that is often ignored or forgotten by most users.
The Disk Cleanup wizard is located at:
Windows 98: Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk Cleanup
Windows XP: Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk Cleanup
Windows Vista: Start, Control Panel, Performance Information, Open Disk Cleanup
The Disk Cleanup wizard occasionally crashes, usually due to spyware. If this happens, use the recommended tools (left) to find and eliminate the offending spyware or adware.
Step 2 - Remove Unneeded Applications
Go to Add and Remove Programs (via the Control Panel) and remove applications that you never use, are old or outdated, or don’t work anymore.
Step 3 - Backup Old Files and Large Documents to CD/DVD
If you have a lot of files stored on your computer that are not being accessed on a regular basis, you may want to back them up to CD or DVD and then delete them. This not only frees up disk space but also gives you peace of mind that, if something catastrophic happens to your system, your old documents will be safe.
What software should you use to backup the files?
FixTool recommends Nero.

However, if you are on a tight budget, the software that came with your computer will probably work just as well.
If the files you are backing up are especially important, it is wise to make two CD/DVDs and test each one before removing the files from your computer. Store the backups in a safe, cool place, inside a protective cover.
